2025 Global Ambassador Event for the World Confederation of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies (WCCBT)
Abstract:
Internet-delivered Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (ICBT) has been extensively researched and there is strong evidence of its effectiveness in routine care. The approach addresses important barriers to accessing cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), including client preference for self-management of symptoms, stigma, geographical limitations, financial constraints, and time restrictions. Despite benefits, the nature of ICBT is not fully understood among CBT practitioners. This lack of familiarity may hinder its adoption particularly when there is uncertainty about the effectiveness of ICBT, and how ICBT can complement in person CBT (e.g., referral when clients are on waiting lists, as a first step in care or step down from care, when patients are not benefitting from or able to attend in person). This webinar will review literature on ICBT effectiveness and provide lessons learned in the delivery of ICBT within routine mental health care. Hadjistavropoulos will discuss her research on the role of written therapeutic communication that can complement ICBT, including information on the nature, amount and duration of therapist support. Participants will gain practical guidance that will help them understand and evaluate ICBT that is increasingly available in practice.
Presenter Biography:
Heather Hadjistavropoulos, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychology at University of Regina, and former President of the Canadian Association of Cognitive Behaviour Therapies. She is a recognized leader in the development, evaluation and optimization of Internet-delivered Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (ICBT). Distinguished by the depth and breadth of her research on ICBT, and knowledge mobilization efforts in Canada, Hadjistavropoulos’ research addresses patient, provider, and health system needs to improve ICBT and overcome barriers to accessing CBT.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this workshop, the learner will be able to:
1. Identify barriers to accessing traditional CBT and explain how ICBT addresses these challenges.
2. Identify the characteristics of ICBT programs, including content and therapeutic practices.
3. Explain the effectiveness of ICBT and some key considerations when offering ICBT in routine care.
4. Describe the nature of written therapeutic communication in ICBT that often complements ICBT.
