Abstract:  Achieving effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy across a diversity of patients continues to be a foremost concern of clinicians and clinical researchers alike. Further, therapeutic alliance appears to be an important feature in supporting favorable outcomes from evidence-based treatments. Yet, there remains a scarcity of empirical data testing specific features that most readily facilitate effective collaboration in a multi-cultural therapy relationship. This webinar aims to enhance clinicians’ competency in providing multi-cultural therapy within the context of CBT, via discussion of empirically-derived guidelines for achieving this goal in therapy with patients (and therapists) of various cultural/racial backgrounds. A multi-cultural case study presenting with several co-morbid Axis I disorders is briefly provided to exemplify the practical application of these guidelines over the course of CBT.

About the presenter: 

Anu Asnaani, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology in Psychiatry at the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Asnaani received her Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology from Brown University and her Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Boston University. Dr. Asnaani completed her clinical internship at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Her current interests include understanding how diversity influences emotion regulation, cross-cultural aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders, increasing our understanding about mechanisms underlying successful treatment outcome, and effectively increasing dissemination of empirically supported treatments for OCD, PTSD and other anxiety disorders. Dr. Asnaani specializes in cognitive-behavioral treatment for social anxiety, panic disorder, specific phobias, generalized anxiety, substance use disorders, Prolonged Exposure for PTSD, and Exposure and Response Prevention (EX/RP) for OCD.
